In December 2004 a guy called Gary Brolsma uploaded a youtube video of himself “goofing around” as he puts it and miming to a Moldovan pop band’s song called Dragostea din te. The youtube video became an internet classic and earned him the reputation as simply the Numa Numa Guy. Initially pleased with the attention that his attempt at self promotion brought him he revelled in the cult following of millions. As time went on though he decided he did not like the worldwide attention he was receiving and went off the radar.
Before we go any further let’s have a look at Gary in action
Lots of people tried to follow his lead but nothing quite reached the giddy heights of the original upload. One of the best follow ups I believe was the following flash animated cartoon which put together Gary, Simon Cowell & an appearance on American Idol.
After a short time out of the limelight Gary decided he did actually want the the attention after all, returning in 2007 with a band called Nowadays and a new version of the video entitled funnily enough “New Numa” and even an official website.
Update 16/10/08
This has to be one of the most original uses for the frequency of the soundtrack by someone else who decided that goofing around with both the song and the computer game Halo may be a good idea.
